Letting go is a type of meditation that requires your conscious intention for it to grow. It begins with a choice and it is the intention to not resist what is. Sometimes it is absolutely necessary to do our best to change and remedy a situation. But when all other options are futile then the best course of action is to not mentally resist what is.
What is mental resistance? It is basically denying what already is or what cannot be changed. It is basically fighting with yourself and creating unnecessary distress. The more we resist what is the more internal distress we create. But the moment you accept everything that is, you begin to gain your power back. You gain back your ability to remain at peace while still being able to act or change course of action when a new option becomes available.
Through practice and repetition, the act of the letting go meditation begins to create space in between your thoughts and emotions. It allows you to take control of the ship in an ocean of emotions and automatic thoughts that are steering you off course.
How to Perform the Letting Go Meditation
We begin by being as comfortable as possible. This meditation can be performed sitting down, standing up, walking, or even laying flat on a bed. If you fall sleep during the meditation that is actually a sign that you were doing it correctly. It just means you were sleep deprived and for your health it was essential for you to sleep. Once you wake up you continue with your meditation.
The general rule of the meditation is to accept everything that is.
Every thought that comes your way is perfect as it is.
Every emotion that you experience is perfect as it is.
If you find yourself judging a particular thought or emotion you simply be gentle with yourself and you let go.
Every time you catch yourself attempting to change something mentally, by analyzing, you let go. Over and over you let go.
Our self-created suffering is like willingly riding a bicycle of torment that requires your intention for it to continue to propel forward.
It requires you to pedal by wanting to change what is. The opposite of pedaling is to let go. To accept everything and continue to let go.
Meditation just like anything you wish to be good in life is accomplished through regular and consistent practice. The more you do it the better you will be at dissolving unnecessary and self-created suffering. Then as you progress you will notice the space in between your thoughts grows greater and greater. In that space is where you begin to experience an inner peace. This higher state of being that is untouched by your life circumstances. It only grows stronger the more you practice.
